IS IT TIME TO TREK ONTO THE TECHIES

Mining is, pardon the pun, in the pits. Companies and share prices have been decimated, we all know, we all feel it hard. It makes no sense to ditch your mining stocks, actually, there is a lot of well priced stocks out there, and if carefully picked, over time you should do very well. There are many well financed juniours as well, enviably sitting on millions of dollars, lookng to take over projects and joint ventures.

On the other side of the coin, there are past, and present mining companies that are changing their corporate direction. some are changing their corporate profiles and landscape, venturing into new fields, such as medical, biotech, retail, and technology. Many have had their share prices crushed, and if one can seek them out, and have the patience for the paper shuffle to unfold, there may be good opportunities to pick up shares at pennies or even parts of pennies. A lot are trading in the US, on the pink sheets ond the OTCBB. Tread lightly though. I will post, and others are welcome to also, the symbols of some that I stumble across. Some I may own, some I may watch, some I may just stumble on their press releases or corporate filings. Good luck, maybe we can find something in the meantime, while we wait for our mining stocks to do an about face.

I guess I will start off with USAU, presently on the pink sheets. Looks like they are moving into the technology field/medical. May be of interest.

USAU Tries Hand at Biometrics

LAS VEGAS, Oct 28, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

The Company (Pink Sheets:USAU) wishes to announce that it will be concentrating its efforts on acquiring, developing and/or joint venturing technology in the biometric security area. Accordingly, the Company will be filing to change its name to "USA Biometrics Inc." to more accurately reflect the major emphasis the Company will be placing on its biometric identification division and will be changing its primary website to USABiometricsInc.com.

Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. Biometrics refers to the automatic identification of a person based on his/her physiological or behavioral characteristics. In information technology (IT), biometrics refers to technologies that measure and analyze human body characteristics, such as fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice patterns, facial patterns, palm prints, subcutaneous vascular patterns and hand measurements, for authentication purposes.

Authentication is the process of determining whether someone or something is, in fact, who or what it is declared to be. Authentication by biometric verification is becoming increasingly common in corporate and public security systems, consumer electronics and point of sale (POS) applications as well as home applications. In addition to security, the driving force behind biometric verification has been convenience.

Biometric devices, such as authentication scanners, consist of:

-- A reader or scanning device

-- Software that converts the scanned information into digital form and compares match points

-- A database that stores the biometric data for comparison

To prevent identity theft, biometric data is usually encrypted when it's gathered. Biometric verification works on the back end by converting the biometric input, utilizing a software application to identify specific points of data as match points. The match points in the database are processed using an algorithm that translates that information into a numeric value. The database value is compared with the biometric input the end user has entered into the scanner and authentication is either approved or denied.

With the increased integration of computers and Internet into our everyday lives, it is necessary to protect sensitive and personal data. By replacing PINs, biometric techniques can potentially prevent unauthorized access to ATMs, cellular phones, laptops, and computer networks. Thus, biometric systems are being deployed to enhance security and reduce financial fraud.

The Company will now be pursuing only the biometric identification elements of the MyScreenMD project previously announced.

Re: IS IT TIME TO TREK ONTO THE TECHIES/zorro

I am looking for mining companies that venture into other businesses, just to watch how they make out. They can be from anywhere, the US, Canada, etc. I am curious to see if mining companies that move out of mining for various reasons can get into something viable. It would be interesting to see if their shares would get a noticeable pop after removing themselves from mining. Will they have a better ability to raise funds to make a go of it. From time to time I will update with stocks listed on this thread to see how things transpire.

Re: IS IT TIME TO TREK ONTO THE TECHIES

So, you say there is no value on those markets. I dont care for the pinks, the OTCBB is not half as bad. I will go where I can make money though. This is not limited to those markets melodyfan, any market. So, show us some real value, I may be interested. Just talking real value does not present real value. Pointing out real value gives others a chance to make their decisions and arguments. By the way, moly down to just above $24 bucks, sucks.
