Prepare for HIGHER FOOD PRICES this Winter

You don't see it just yet, but it is coming according to Don Coxe in an interview with KINGWORLD NEWS as America experiences the worst drought in years. Farmers who are unable to irrigate are just plowing their crops under and slaughtering cattle to save on the cost of feed. Cheap meat prices for now but what about this winter? http://www.kingworldnews.com/kingworldnews/KWN_DailyWeb/Entries/2012/7/2...

Re: Prepare for HIGHER FOOD PRICES this Winter

Frank is absolutely right, CORN in particular is an ingredient in so many food stuffs that a scarcity due to lower yield is bound to affect prices of a lot of common processed foods, to say nothing of the costs of feeding animals, including dairy cows, so milk, cheese, yogurt are all at risk.

I can cite my own experience having  an ACRE+ organic garden. We do have a good reliable well and I can pump steady for 4-6 hrs a day without running out, but that is no substitute for regular rains. Watering with a ordinary garden hose for such a large garden is not only time consuming but not practical for crops such as corn and potatoes, at least I was not able to get around to everything needing water on a timely basis. Worst year for potato bugs I have ever seen, they got ALL my eggplant (same nightshade family as potatoes, and while my potatoe plants were 3 ft. high, they died so quickly I estimate my yield will be less than half of normal as well as size of potatoes.

Conversely I have the nicest tomatoes, peppers and cabbage ever, things I concentrated on in my daily watering, other things like onions the rains simply came too late and could not be revived, they were simply too advanced in their development stage. I am sure a lot of acres got plowed under as Frank notes, and when there is a lack of supply, prices go up.
