Truth that no one wants to hear...but needs to hear LOUD AND CLEARLY!!!
America is going broke…slowly…irrevocably…without a doubt… and so we search for solutions to a problem that has blossomed since WWII and is now strangling us! We can try to ignore it…we can figure out how to profit from it …or… we can roll up our sleeves and fix it!!! Ignoring it will only hasten our demise!!! Profiting from it will only enrich a few at the expense of the many!!! And rolling up our sleeves will mean political suicide for those who finally do the necessary governing…it will mean that the governed will bleed…and the American Dream will…by necessity…die and re-emerge in a totally different definitive and operative mode!
The truth I refer to is, of course, the American National Debt!!
To listen to the current rhetoric is to listen to both a lie and a dream at the same time!! Some say just cutting spending will fix the problem while others want to tax the rich!! The lie is that one or the other will fix the problem while the dream is that somehow it will simply go away without serious pain to everyone
.
Before I go on, let me define a couple of terms as I understand them (if my definitions seem too simplistic then read the rest of this with a grain of salt and realize that I am NOT an economist…NOT a politician…NOT an expert on anything except life which has taught me a few things about the subject of living.)
1) DEFICIT SPENDING…as I understand it, it is the act of spending more than one has at the time the decision is made. EXAMPLE: I want to buy 1000 acres of land but only have financing available for 750 acres. If I commit to the 1000 acres, then I have deficit spent on the remaining 250 acres which in PRIVATE ENTERPRISE does not happen…at least if one is smart…Better to wait until I can do the deal with the proper financing or just not do the deal at all or I might invite a third party into the deal. But in GOVERNMENT an entirely different matrix has developed…slowly and now catastrophically…that if we want something , then we simply do it and 1) hope that revenues (taxes) will be there to pay for it or 2) actually raise revenues (TAXES…they are the SAME DAMN THING NO MATTER WHAT NOUN ONE USES!!!) or 3) we sell interest-bearing BONDS on the open market to fund the programs we have begun which then becomes part of the NATIONAL DEBT!!!
2) NATIONAL DEBT…the amount of money we have borrowed (BONDS OUTSTANDING) which must be (legally) paid back to the bond holders sooner or later.
We hear these terms so often and in so many sound bites that it is easy to become deaf to the implications of both until something happens to jerk our heads out of the sand and PAY ATTENTION!!! We have come to the abyss folks…looked over the edge…and then jumped anyway!!! OUR NATIONAL DEBT IS NOW RATED AT AA!!!! And the implications are huge!!
Now!!! What to do about it is the question? That question is one that when properly answered is distasteful to all because to fix the problem we are going to have to redefine the AMERICAN DREAM…if such a thing ever existed in the first place…, raise revenues (TAXES) or cut programs and services we have addicted ourselves to as we have advanced as a society!!
And the blame is not simply one political party or one competing philosophy against another…the blame is on all of us as persons…as political voices…as corporations…and other institutions such as our educational, religious, and social institutions that have become myoptic and unyielding in their positions which now nearly makes a solution impossible to do!!!
I’m just a simple farmer but I will attempt to offer some solutions because not to do so will mean that I have given up on my country which has given me a very good life despite its sometimes silly ways!!
But before we can fix the problem we need to honestly assess how we got here in the first place which I will do in the next article I post.

Elementary economics teaches us the every transaction must have both a buyer and a seller to be completed. Politicians could not buy votes unless the electorate is willing to sell them!
And today's electoral climate is just that....one big auction!! Without regard to any longterm consequences!! We are witnessing the Death of a Nation....a way of life and...we are smiling as we do it!!

Frank, Problems with the Buy American slogans are that because the public is basically adleminded concerning trade imbalances, they tend to take their frustrations out on what is in plain sight. In other words, they realize they are not supporting America by buying that TV made in China, but they figure there doing OK because they bought it at Walmart. That's their job creation support. Then they see the RBC,and the TD bank open up here in Florida.RBC lost a lot,in part because Americans essentially are not willing to be taken over by Canada in the banking industry.LOL What complete nonsense! That's what I mean about frustration being used the wrong way.(what is in plain sight) .I am thrilled to have TD here in Florida .I hope they make it. I dealt with Bank of America for years, had problems with Wells Fargo and I generally consider these banks tyrants and not at all in the best interest of the American people. We have a lot of good little banks here, honest people but TD is the only large bank I would recommend, and the fact that they are based in Canada is hardly an unpatriotic business decision. As far as the oil.Yes,I 've thought for years Canadian/American partnership for the Tar Sands is the way to go,but MAKE the damn commitment and get moving. Between Canada and the United States,we should NOT have to import ANY Oil,Natural Gas,Uranium and Coal. That pretty much makes us completely energy independent and any surplus in any of the commodities, can certainly find buyers willing to pay more. The key is to agree on set prices for Canada /U.S. and increase production on everything to SELL the surplus at the highest bid. There is NO shortages, just a will to commit to (in oil's case ) the more expensive heavy oil. In Coal's case, to Liquid coal ,Natural gas case to LNG or CNG and finally the nuclear case for building more reactors. Americans are letting everything slip away because we have been brainwashed to believe that because there is an oil bargain today, they'll be another one tomorrow. That pretty much sums up the Persian Gulf problem. If we don't become energy independent in the next 5 years we could still be protecting something that sends us into "beyond bankruptcy ".

Hey southpen, I am in full agreement. Getting off topic but related to the topic is the do gooders protesting about the Oil Sands proposed pipeline and the environmental impact. Safety first yes but scrap it NO. Both Countries benefit. Along with a lot of new jobs and less dependence on oil from a not so friendly country, much of Canada's oil although shipped to the States is refined , processed etc. Canadians buy much of this back as a finished produt so we all win. I am sure China would be happy to provide the funding for a pipeline to a Canadian Sea port and sign a long term contract for any and all the oil. When I say the word China, i use it very loosely. I can take a look at a lot of items in my home that were produced by an American or Canadian owned company.I should state GREEDY AMERICAN AND CANADIAN COMPANIES Well known companies but the products were made abroad using cheap labour and sold to us at a temporary bargain.

Agreed Lou, "Ask not ,what your country can do for you ,ask what, you can do for your country"JFK,1960 (I probably got the quote wrong but the point is the same as your last sentence, ending in "all about me.". I am not 100% behind protectionist trade policies but the way things are with emerging nations ,it's gotten to be ridiculous. 90-95% of everything in good old Walmart is from China or at least the East. The products are hidden, with American names ,yet manufactured elsewhere. The problem with advancing the trade protection is the most visible foreign entities get hammered (unjustly) while the hidden jewels of China's huge trade imbalance hide under the American flag in our retail giants.People are just too lazy to figure out what products and what companies belong to American manufacturing.Canadian and Mexican manufacturing should be treated with the same respect and dignity as American products(because we have a solid trade agreement that benefits all of us)All other goods from foreign lands should be fairly taxed on basic arithmatic that determines if their is any trade imbalance. "All about me",is usually in a money sense, more about the Corporation branded "American" that does more for the economy of a distant land than it's own economy and yet claims to be strongly patriotic.

Through out history empires and dynasties have fallen. The overall average time span for each is between 250 and 300 years. Historical reasons for their declines are varried from being Militarilarily defeated, Famine, Political up heavel from within to Economic failure due to it's citizens living beyond their means & Government becomes the largest employer in the country. Almost all times the root cause can in hind sight be traced back to the political leadership. Driven by greed unwilling to compromise and implement tough necessary measures for the common good of the country.
One of the biggest problems America has is spending to much money in other parts of the world playing fairy God Mother & Policeman rather than puting that money to work at home looking after their own citizens.
The American dream has changed from Country First to "All ABOUT ME"

While the viewpoints on how we got here are interesting and will be reflected in iowaTrukker's next post, it really matters not. When you are sailing in the middle of a storm with no safe harbour in sight, it matters not how you got there, but what you will do to protect yourself and prevent your own ship from sinking. PM's will be a part of that but as so many others are figuring out, it will also require guns and butter and a trusted network.
The message that everyone needs to understand and doesn't is that we are indeed in the middle of an economic storm that has the ability to wipe out everything in the economy.
Re: Truth that no one wants to hear...but needs to ...
This debt was created from one core reason. Politicians trying to buy votes before their next election. They borrow money to bolster the economy to make things look as pretty as possible before the election. They deal with the consequences later - or pass them on to a new administration. And then the new administration just blames all the nations financial problems on the last administration. Zero accountability.

Hey iowatrukker, I always look forward to your words of wisdom and I believe ithas been a while since youir last posting. No Pain No Gain. There is no doubt some pain will be required and it cannot be solved overnight. If only politicians could put stop putting getting elected or re-elected as their top priority.

Iowa. In my opinion raising taxes and cutting spending can only buy us time. It's not a solution to anything. The total currency system throughout the World needs to be overhauled.America's 130 military bases (guess), outside of American territories must close. We have to adjust what our nation should be responsible for in a monetary way throughout the World. Our dollar has to be valued to make us more competitive worldwide and make imports less affordable. We have to overhaul a grossly defective pension system at all levels of government and encourage homegrown investment. We have to learn that patriotism has less to do with flag waving and more to do with right action in your countries best interest.Debt is simply a creation of the manipulation of our currencies value, by people throughout the World that created our system and several more like it. generation after generation. The British Empire descended as the American Empire ascended.I will await your reasoning on how we got here.If your conclusions to how we got here are the same as mine then maybe some of what I think we have to do, will concur with what you think. It's really open ended .
