The Stock Next Door

I picked this title because it is about networking for new investment ideas. The lead could be from someone you play hockey/sports with,a club member or anyone in your community. I ask questions about their occupation;their employer;is it a public company; and how is business? It is a great way to meet people and learn something about them. Then I look up the company, check its charts for patterns / volume, see if insiders are buying and due further due dilligence.

HNL-T  Summer 2009- They build camp trailers for oilpatch/mining. I knew oilsands were in a downturn because of oil prices being low and workers were saying that they were slow. I checked canadianinsiders.com and the insiders were heavy buyers. The company even started buying back their shares. The stock price seemed to have bottomed so I bought at 1.20. Today they are extremely busy, are trading near 5.00 and have initiated a dividend.

Lea-v  fall 2010   I was at their shop talking to a foreman. I knew their stock price was way down from where it was and I asked him about it. He said it was about to turn around. It was about 10 cents/share. I did not really look ito it at the time and did not buy it. If I had checked the insiders were buying and now it is 1.18/share about 6 months later.

BT.UN-T Fall 2010   I was playing sports with a foreman from the company and asking questions. He said they were very busy. I did not buy it but insiders were, and  their share price has risen a lot in the last 6 months. It is another turnaround story.

PRW.UN late fall 2010 They build roads for oil companies.I played sports with a boss from the company and he said their shares were going to turn around. I talk often with an employee of the company. I looked it up and the insiders were buying so I bought at 15 cents. It is still a turnaround story but three months later the shares are higher at 43 cents.

I am watching other companies operating around here and often people outside of your usual circles can give you clues so I am open to their ideas/experiences.

Re: The Stock Next Door

nice call on MNW - they have outperformed the market big time in the past 6 months and since your post. That $75 million dollar deal was big.. oil co's are the only ones getting cash in this market and they better be good as well. Cynergy Advisors obviously believes strongly in the deal. nice looking out!

Re: The Stock Next Door

Interesting that PRW should hit a 52 wk high on virtually the same day that a mining service Co. (Foraco FAR / TSX) does the same. Also just discovered in my research is a Bakken focussed company that looks pretty good compared to its peers. Check out Mountainview Energy MVW and in the interests of full disclosure my main holding in the Bakken is currently TRIANGLE Petroleum TPLM, and am also considering OASIS OAS, unfortunately more good cndidates for purchase thatn I have capital to accomodate.

Re: The Stock Next Door

Another "stock next door" that deserves consideration is Balmoral Resources BAR=V who have one of the largest land packages in one of Canada;s premier mining districts. They are on trend with the 10M oz. Detour Gold deposit, have had numerous high grade discoveries yet it is still early days for their total land package, are well financed by management that discovered and eventually sold for $424.M the Timmins West package to Lakeshore Gold.

In spite of what may well prove to be some "temporary" problems, Lakeshore's asets are also grossly undervalued. There are certainly a lot of undervalued companies at current evaluations, the trick is defining what management groups have the finances and land packages to come out of this slump as winners. Balmoral is certainly high on my list of potential big winners.

Re: The Stock Next Door

Hi thinker 70

I own Kam,Gpd,Ecc,Bcg,Cuu,Stk as well. BCG and Stk are reopening old gold mines. I find it interesting to visit HNL production site to see for myself and talk to the workers about how busy they are. It is an amazing site. Prw is a turnaround story. I know one of the operators and often chat about how busy they are. I also know 2 of the owners of Prw. They are building oilfield roads all over northern Alta and BC and recently bought a landfill in northern BC. Their last 6 months have seen quite a turnaround and it is on their last earnings release. Some insiders converted their company loans into common shares. The company saved the interest payments. There has also been some insider buying.

ENS-Enseco Energy has a big presence around here. They seem to be turning around, have insider buying and I know an employee who I often ask how the company is doing.

Re: The Stock Next Door

One stock that specifically fits the "stock next door" blueprint is "Pinnacles own" Comstock updated in this issue. I happen to own both Kaminak and Comstock and am looking forward to their next drill results. I also hold most of the stocks in which Shawn Ryan is involved, again based on successful "association" with either previously successful individuals or "on trend" holdings with other successful mines or major resources.

zed-v reported great earnings

ens-v reported great earnings

hnl-t last reported earnings were great

prw-Petrowest has not reported yet

Re: The Stock Next Door

hi Thinker

You are right. LDI was started by the guy who built Major Drilling.(experience)

STK is a startup of a former producing gold mine in Ontario.

Re: The Stock Next Door

Your title could also be applied quite correctly in another way. The best place to prospect for a mineable resource is NEXT DOOR to an existing successful mine. Just as it is usually profitable to follow successful management as they lend their talents to new companies, it also makes sense to follow such successful management teams into districts, mining camps, trends that already have proven resources and producing mines. It takes an incredible amount of research to pick winners.

Re: The Stock Next Door

hi Thinker

I was on site at Leader Energy and the foreman was telling me that they were recapitalizing and it was going to turn around. The stock was way down at 10 cents and I did not buy it. It really turned around since and the insiders had been buying. I did buy HNL under similar circumstances and did well. I recently bought ENS-Enseco Energy for the same reasons and it has doubled.(still own it) I bought PRW- Petrowest for similar reasons although the stock has doubled the numbers have not turned yet. They build roads(mostly oilfield) and I still own it. I know an equipment operator and they are very busy. I played sports with one of the bosses and talked to him before I bought in. He said things were turning around. (patience required)

Re: The Stock Next Door

Talk about missing the boat. When I wrote about Rugged.com in Oct/11 with the price at around $14. (after reaching a high around $21. I watched it fall as low as $11. but didn't want to buy until there was a firmly entrenched turnaround. It seemed to oscilate a couple $$s in the mid range of $14.-$15. which in hindsight WOULD have been a good buy point. Without warning they received a buyout offer that sent their price into the $25. range overnight, no opportunity to get on board so instead of investigating further I just assumed I had missed the boat only to find that a competitive offer had come in from Siemans that sent the price up another $10. what a missed opportunity!

Re: The Stock Next Door

HNL just announced another 600 man camp sale. I visit the site and talk with employees, all is great.

PRW The insiders switched their loans to the company into more shares in the company. My worker contact says they are very busy building oilfield roads. turnaround?

ENS insiders are still buying and company is turning around. They just moved to Clairmont

Re: The Stock Next Door

hi thinker70

My job requires visiting many worksites as yours did as part of my regular work . Why not network while on site?

HNL announced today that it entered into a contract to build a 600 man camp worth 40 million for an oilsands company. When I bought shares in HNL the oilpatch was slow but the HNL insiders were buying. It turned out to be a good entry point.

Re: The Stock Next Door

I have made more money doing my own research on the internet looking for undervalued companies and insider buying among other things than I have buying stocks recommended by professional analysts, with a few exceptions. There are some good analysts out there but you can spend a lot of money finding them. I commend you for asking questions wherever your activities take you, you are right, you never know where the next excellent stock tip will come from, the key is doing a lot of research and due diligence, not acting on casual information without proof.

I was in a great position to do that when I was driving expedite courier, each delivery was a potential new company to learn more about and research in depth. One comes to mind that is not well known yet, RUGGED.com which ran as high as $21.+ before the market meltdown. They are currently hovering around the $14. mark and anything below that should be a good buy point again. They provide heavy duty components to such stellar companies as ABB and Siemans and with an infrastructor/electrical grid buildout, should do quite well.

Re: The Stock Next Door

update

ENS- Enseco Energy has a branch in Beaverlodge

ENS Insider buying on canadianinsider.com is a turnaround story(oil service) that I bought recently. I have been to their location, know an employee and they are very busy.

LEA-Leader Energy-the oil service company I didn`t buy has insider buying and is at 70 cents

PRW-Petrowest is an oil service road builder that I own. It is still a turnaround and my employee contact says they are extreemly busy. Heavy rains delayed some road building projects in early summer but he says washed out oilfield roads and bridges will give them lots of work this winter.

HNL-Horizon North is still very busy and pays a .16 dividend

Most oil and oil related companies seem to be hiring around here

Re: The Stock Next Door

thanks Frank

Some of the best insights come from the workers. Timing is not always the best when making purchases. The best time would be buying in a trading range or just after a breakout above the 50 day moving average. If I buy a stock in a company that is doing good things I will stick with it in a downturn unless I need a tax loss sale. If I don`t make extra trades, I don`t pay extra commissions. I don`t use stop losses because I hate getting whipsawed. I don`t like getting sold out on a short downturn only to watch the stock you just sold recover nicely. A good example was the last downturn in oil brought all stocks oil related down. I stuck with ZED(well monitoring),DEE-T(nat gas) and PSD-T(seismic) and with good insider buying they went on to recover nicely. I added oil service stocks at the bottom HNL(camp trailers)recently PRW.UN(road builders) and more recentlySMB-V(African oil spec) I also bought mining stocks in the downturn like CUU-V.  I try to buy something every month to get a dollar cost averaging effect. I have made mistakes but it is always a learning curve.  Buying junior companies reminds me of planting 8 inch evergreen trees. They grow at different rates, they just need time and patience.

Re: The Stock Next Door

Hey ohjay, I must say blogs such as yours, I and other Pinnacle members enjoy most when a member is speaking about his own thoughts opinions and a little insight as to why he is preparwed to recommend a stock rather than cutting and pasting articles of the so called experts without throwing in their own two cents. Yours is due diligence at a high level when you also include the worker on the line.

Re: The Stock Next Door

Hi Frank

It is fun to do bottom up investigating like this. I was on site at HNL-T and have seen for myself how busy they are. I always ask workers opinions and they are very positive about their company. They live in my community.  It is a big operation with well connected insiders.

I know some of the insiders at PRW.UN-T and they are headquartered here.

Even though I was onsite talking to a foreman at LEA-T,I don`t know him but they operate in our community.

ZED-V does business in this area through electric/instrumentation companies. I own shares and ask bosses opionions on ZED when I am visiting their electrical company sites. ZED monitors oil wells remotely by computer. ZED shares are creeping up near 52 week high and they have insider buying although one recent sell. .

I have met briefly the president of BT.UN-T. I played hockey with one of their foreman.

Anyone in the area could be a source of new ideas. As always I look into them to do due dilligence.

Re: The Stock Next Door

Hi ohjay, It is always surprising where the next investment opportunity lies and when you do find it and in these cases you can do almost on site due diligence.

Re: The Stock Next Door

I don`t know what the total market for camp trailers is. They have a few competitors. The market would really be open ended. Every new oilsands or mining operation in the north could need a camp for their workers if they are in a remote location. Planning for any such project would need lead time to get their camp built and transported to site. These guys own swamp mats for temporary roads over swampy muddy locations. They have their own trucks for transport and barges on northern rivers to communities where there is little access. They also have their own catering company. If you need a camp in the north they can build it,staff it and transport it to site. Their site where they build them is running at capacity and some work is contracted off site.

Re: The Stock Next Door

What is the total $ market for camp trailers for oilpatch/mining?? I presume if HNL had the entire market.. You want to find companies who already got the contracts and have little competition
