High School Whiz Kid Wins March’s Stock Challenge!
About two months ago we received a very unique email from a member of the Pinnacle community. That member was GlobalInvestor; and in that email, GlobalInvestor laid out a lengthy summary as to why he selected Ithaca Energy and Minera Andes for January’s Stock Challenge. He also mentioned that they were two companies we should put on our own watch list. Now, to be clear, we receive emails like that regularly, but what made this email particularly special was that GlobalInvestor casually mentioned he was a high school student who had just visited a mining conference in Vancouver with his classmates!
By the end of January, GlobalInvestor had amassed a 49.76% one month return with his two picks for the Stock Challenge - good enough to give him third spot in the competition. That alone is an amazing feat for a high school student, considering how many experienced and successful investors take part in our Stock Challenge - men and women triple his age (or older, but who’s counting). But this month, GlobalInvestor outdid himself and has won March’s Stock Challenge with a staggering one month return of 67.51%! And GlobalInvestor returned this impressive result in a rather dismal month for resource stocks. If that wasn’t enough, GlobalInvestor has achieved all of this after being a member of the Pinnacle community for barely 3 months. This kid is the real deal.
GlobalInvestor blew the rest of the 179 competitors in March’s Stock Challenge away after selecting Africa Oil Corp (AOI:TSXV) and Ithaca Energy (IAE:TSX). Africa Oil was the story of the month on the TSX Venture exchange as the company’s share price skyrocketed in value. Africa Oil Corp started the month of March trading at $1.88. After the company announced an oil discovery in Kenya, its shares took off and it closed March’s trading at $4.20! Ithaca Energy started March trading at $2.84 per share and closed the month at $3.18 - icing on the cake for GlobalInvestor. As mentioned, GlobalInvestor finished March with an average return of 67.51% - proving yet again that no matter what the market conditions may be, there are always profits to be had.
Coming in a distant second was Clint007 who had an impressive month, despite being well behind the lead. The Montreal native came through with a one month average return of 42.67% after selecting Northern Graphite (NGC:TSXV) and Strike Graphite (SRK:TSXV). Clearly Clint007 likes his graphite plays. Northern Graphite was a big winner for Clint007 this month as its share price went from $1.85 to $3.19. Strike Graphite posted modest gains as its share price increased from $0.31 to $0.35 in March.
Only one previous Stock Challenge champ managed to crack the TOP 10 this month. It was none other than Pinnacle Prestige leader, Frank Tabbert, who posted a solid return of 23.33% - good enough for 4th spot.
