I didn't like some of the answers acceptable to wit:

The biggest drawback of the SPDR gold ETF is that trades are settled in doilars, not gold and at no time do you actually own Physical gold.

THe inflation adjusted price of gold relies on what is used as a measure of inflation. Official CPI is not a good measure for reasons well known and tends to understate the real rate of inflation.
