Why the iPhone Will Fail

There has been a great deal of news concerning the new release of the 3G iPhone here in the U.S. Just walking around New York today, I saw two full AT&T stores of people lined-up to purchase this new toy. It's definitely sleek and offers some very well designed capabilities...but I believe that in its current form the device will fail to be a transformative force.

This might seem like an absurd statement, considering the promotional strengths of the iPhone's chief personification: Steve Jobs. But this time, Mr. Jobs has let his ego hinder his foresight. By trying to maintain control of all applications designed for the iPhone, Mr. Jobs has created a very limited product that doesn't have the depth to sustain long-term prominence.

I have recently traveled throughout Asia and observed numerous trends. Countries which have allowed the mobile phone to evolve naturally with little-to-no limitations on software and downloads are also the countries with the most interesting and evolved mobile capabilities. The world is moving ever-so-quickly to a new form of sharing and creating information: open-source and open-access are the way of the future. The same underlying concept that allowed the Personal Computer to flourish, the Internet to explode, and Wikipedia to grow is creating new market demands. By locking the iPhone applet development, Apple has locked the creativity necessary to enable any platform to flourish. By insisting that all new software be approved by the Company, Apple has walled-off the iPhone from the radical and disruptive design needed to move the product over the tipping point.

I believe in the open creation and sharing of information. Platforms that allow this to occur will succeed in this new world. Companies that enable this underlying human trend will show the ability to quickly gain value.

Here is an example of the egotistically driven decision by Apple to control all applications creating bad publicity: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10011338-37.html

The Asian market is generally characterized by phones that run the Microsoft Mobile OS.

Re: Why the iPhone Will Fail

You're correct, it's selling quickly in Asia. But they launched the phone in the richer Asian countries (Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong). Those countries have mobile markets and income levels that are more similar to the U.S. compared to the developing behemoths of Asia.

India and China have been characterized by wide open mobile markets, where downloads and other software are regularly installed on mobile phones. I don't think that it's a coincidence that they haven't officially launched in those two countries which represent over a third of the world's population.

Re: Why the iPhone Will Fail

just my opinion but apple will sell another 800million ipods before they reach market saturation, rimm and apple will dominate smartphones but apple will increase marketshare considerably. business will drive rimm but pleasure will drive apple with iphone, ipod, itunes, apple movie downloads.

That's a great point about the Razr Vuki777. I completely forgot about that phone. Also a huge hit and created a lot of interest in Motorolla.

The iphone seems to me like a fad thing.

Re: Why the iPhone Will Fail

I agree that it's a very powerful trend and that it will probably create a good deal of short-term revenue. But Motorola also created a very similar trend only a few years ago. The Razr sold millions of units and was an international hit. But Motorola is a struggling company right now, primarily because they never developed a robust operating system that could sustain a wide variety of applications.

I appreciate all the feedback, it's been very good. I think this blog depicts how I generally think about investing. The first filter or criteria that I use to evaluate companies is whether they fit one of a few broader trends that I believe will become prevalent. In this case, the broader trend is this concept of free-flowing information.
